What is Page Breadcrumbs?

Page Breadcrumbs is a SharePoint web part that gives your page visitors a navigation trail, showing how the page they're on relates to higher-level pages connected to it. It helps users trace their way back through your site and encourages them to browse related content.

Does Page Breadcrumbs work in the SharePoint app in Teams?

Yes. Like all Accelerator 365 apps, Page Breadcrumbs is compatible with the SharePoint app in Teams (formerly Viva Connections), so your breadcrumb trail carries into your Teams experience too.

Does Page Breadcrumbs work on mobile devices?

Yes. Page Breadcrumbs is responsive and designed to work well on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

How do I set up Page Breadcrumbs?

Before adding the web part to a page, you'll need to create a term set in the SharePoint Term Store and a managed metadata column on your Site Pages library, then tag your pages with the appropriate term. See the Getting started guide for full step-by-step instructions.

Why do I need a term set and a managed metadata column?

Page Breadcrumbs uses SharePoint's native managed metadata to build the breadcrumb trail. The term set defines your navigation hierarchy, and the managed metadata column connects your pages to that hierarchy so Page Breadcrumbs can display it correctly.

Does the managed metadata column need a specific display format?

Yes. To make sure Page Breadcrumbs can locate your tagged pages, keep the column's display format set to Term only.

Can I choose a different starting point for the breadcrumb trail?

Yes. Setting a Home term is optional. If you don't want to use the parent term in your term set as the first level of the breadcrumb, you can select a different term in the hierarchy to use instead.

Why isn't my tagged page appearing in the breadcrumb?

Page Breadcrumbs leverages SharePoint search to locate pages, so changes can take up to 15 minutes to propagate. It's also worth checking that the page has been published - Page Breadcrumbs can only locate pages that are in a published state.

Can Page Breadcrumbs navigate across multiple SharePoint sites?

Yes. Page Breadcrumbs supports tagging pages across two or more SharePoint sites, allowing users to navigate cross-site directly from the breadcrumb trail.

What do I need to set up cross-site navigation?

Set up the same managed metadata column name and term set in each SharePoint site you want to include, then tag and publish your pages as normal. Cross-site navigation is supported automatically once this is in place, provided the Include pages only from the current site setting is left disabled in the web part's property pane.

Do visitors need any special permissions to use cross-site breadcrumbs?

Yes. Visitors must have permission to access the other SharePoint sites referenced in the breadcrumb trail in order to navigate to them.

What happens if the same term is used on more than one published page?

If multiple published pages use the same term, Page Breadcrumbs will navigate to the page that was most recently published.
