Step 2: Creating custom dimensions in Google Analytics

Once you've imported the Accelerator 365 container to Google Tag Manager, you'll next want to create custom dimensions in Google Analytics.

This configuration guide is for Site Analytics version 1.18.0.4. Please ensure you have updated the app to the latest version.

Custom dimensions allow you to log SharePoint-specific events collected by the Site Analytics app, making it easier to filter and generate reports on this data within the Google Analytics interface.

  1. Navigate to your Google Analytics property and click on the Admin button located in the bottom left.
  2. Under the Data display section, click on Custom definitions.
  3. Click on Create custom dimension. We recommend to create the following custom dimensions, which are already captured by the Site Analytics by default:

    Dimension name Scope Event parameter
    Site Name Event site_name
    Site URL Event site_url
    Hub Site Name Event hub_site_name
    Hub Site URL Event hub_site_url
    Is News Event is_news
    Page Language Event page_language

Once created the custom dimensions screen should match the screenshot below:

Note: You can omit custom dimensions for Hub Site Name and URL if the SharePoint sites tracked with the Site Analytics app are not Hub Sites.
