The Welcome app provides flexible content options to engage users with dynamic and targeted information. This guide covers how to configure two key content features: rotating slides and SharePoint news articles.

Create and manage slides

Slides are a visual, rotating content feature within the Welcome app. They are ideal for spotlighting announcements, campaigns, videos, and key information.

When adding content, you can choose from three options:

  • Add slide – create engaging, fully branded content to highlight key messages
  • Add video slide – bring content to life with video-driven storytelling
  • Add page link – drive traffic to important SharePoint pages

To configure slides:

  1. Edit the page and select the Welcome web part.

  2. In the web part property pane, expand the Slides section.

  3. Select one of the following options:

Add slide

Use Add slide to create a fully customizable slide.

You can configure:

  • Title and Subtitle – Add descriptive text for the slide.
  • Background image – Upload an image to visually represent the content along with alternative text.
  • Overlay color and opacity – control text readability by adjusting the overlay color and opacity.
  • Call to action – Optionally include a link to direct users to more information.
  • Schedule visibility – Optionally define start and end dates for the slide to appear.
  • Audience targeting – Optionally display slides only to specific user groups, if needed.

Add video slide

Use Add video slide to feature video content.

You can upload your own video, link to an existing one, or reuse a video already stored within your SharePoint site.

After selecting a video, you can configure the same options as a standard slide, including title, subtitle, overlay, scheduling, audience targeting. A thumbnail image for the video slide can also be added if required.

Add page link

Use Add page link to highlight an existing SharePoint page.

The page title, subtitle, and image are automatically pulled through from the linked SharePoint page. You can optionally apply audience targeting to the slide.

    Display news posts

Note: the news feature is available in the latest release of the Welcome app. Refer to our release notes for further details.

The News section allows editors to surface SharePoint News posts directly within the Welcome app. When available, it provides a seamless way to promote updates, announcements, or key stories.

    To configure News:

    1. Edit the Welcome web part and open the News section in the property pane.

    2. Toggle Enable News to activate the section.

    3. Choose the source – a SharePoint site(s) with news posts.

    4. Optionally apply filters such as:

      • Recently added

      • Created by

      • Page properties

    5. Enable Audience targeting to tailor content visibility by user group.

    6. Set Schedule visibility windows for time-sensitive articles.

Note: the news feature respects SharePoint's native news permissions and audience targeting settings.

    Reordering content

The Welcome app allows manual reordering of both Slides and News, giving editors control over the sequence in which content appears. You can choose between grouped or fully custom content sequencing.

    • Grouped order – Choose to display either:

      • News first, then slides

      • Slides first, then news

    • Custom order – Drag and drop slides and pinned news into a single combined list in the exact sequence you want them to appear.

Note: Use the custom order option if you want full editorial control over how messages and visual slides are arranged for the user experience.
